Topic: ෴ Ogha-Tarana Sutra- Crossing over the Flood ෴

  • This is a very amazing Sutra. The eight fold path is explained very clearly in this Suthra using just one sentence. I have found this Sutra from my one of friends that translated from the Pali by Thanissaro Bhikkhu. The translator mentioned this Sutra as the ‘paradox’. Yes this is a paradox for every ordinary people. They cannot solve this paradox until see the Buddha. I am clearly say that there is no any path to see the truth other than eight fold path which explain in this ‘Ogha Tarana Sutra’. This is the path. Please read ‘Ogha Tarana Sutra’ and see the path to the truth.

"I have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One was staying near Savatthi in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's monastery. Then a certain devata,(goddess) in the far extreme of the night, her extreme radiance lighting up the entirety of Jeta's Grove, went to the Blessed One. On arrival, having bowed down to him, she stood to one side. As she was standing there, she said to him, "Tell me, dear sir, how you crossed over the flood."

"I crossed over the flood without pushing forward, without staying in place.

"But how, dear sir, did you cross over the flood without pushing forward, without staying in place?"

"When I pushed forward, I was whirled about. When I stayed in place, I sank. And so I crossed over the flood without pushing forward, without staying in place."

[The devata:] At long last I see a Brahman, totally unbound, who without pushing forward, without staying in place, has crossed over the entanglements of the world.
That is what the devata said. The Teacher approved. Realizing that "The Teacher has approved of me," she bowed down to him, circumambulated him -- keeping him to her right -- and then vanished right there."

Note: can you find the path to cross the Sansara without pushing forward and without staying in place?

Is some one excising like this term. coz Master Lokuge is keep on telling there is no such thing existing? so why then it use that word? pls be kindly explain it to me..>>>> (of course I know there is one existing according the Buddha's view & all are illution)
but point of we call human, animal & stuff...... is it gods existing????

  • Yes you are right Ravi. Most of Sutra say god or goddess come and ask question. Any kind of human animal or god does not exist in the universe. But they do exist in your world. The world is made by your mind. On the other way you have god that you have created. It is mind made concept. Also it is duality. The concept ‘God does exist’ is one end; ‘god does not exist’ is other end. Both are duality. You have to execute both.

If you are talking about 'God', then why do you need to talk about duality?

If you know the meaning of 'God' (not 'gods'), you will definitely know what is the correct end.

‘Know’ is come from the knowledge. It is illusion. If you know the God you will end with death. If you see the God, you will end in haven (eternal life).

Let's go with the formal and accepted meaning, so that we can decide whether it's true or false.

  • No. because I have no 'God". In my one of article (may publish soon) I explain 'God' as Panna. people give meaning of the God from their knowldge. It does not matter, because God is mind made concept. You can give your meaning. I use word like God to explain the something to see the truth. But 'truth' is away from the God.

    A good question.

I think Buddha himself hid all the important ideas within the stories like this and Kakille story so that somebody else in the future could come and reveal them. :-)

Can we believe Lord Buddha wanted to twist his statements in an indirect language so that ordinary people could not understand it?

or can we believe there was somebody who rewrote the whole Paali cannon so that a it was totally different thing from what Buddha preached and still very consistant with all the historical accounts related to Lord Buddha? That's what Dr Senanyake says when he says Vidharshana meditation and getting rid of Klesha is a fabrication by somebody else.

But all the sects Theravada, Mahayana, Vajrayana and Tibetian, which descend independantly for more than 2000 years, point to the same practice except a few variations in outlook.

Nobody can teach vision. That is why truth keeps (in hide) in the stories. Not only after Buddha, many have done meditation in Buddha’s time( in Gothama Buddha sasana). Gothama Buddha did not say “don’t do meditation”. Maitriya Buddha also does not say “don’t do meditation”.

  • As I understand so far, Buddha does not say to "do" or "don't" for the things we do as a human being. Instead Buddha shows the path to the blind ones like us to overcome from this illusion known as "Being" created by our mind.

Also I think what we experience through our 5 senses over time is a mirror image of the truth.

I feel that is the reason why people who sees the truth or Buddha can explain it using this day to day incidents (Just like you describes the truth in one of your articles using the story of Aranthalaawa & Prabhakaran).

Is my understanding correct about the mirror image example?

    ----------------------------------------

Even in the case where so called 'vision' cannot be taught, Lord Buddha easilly could have said what Dr Senanyake says as the interpretation of the King Kosol story if he wanted to say that. This is would have first saved King Kosal and many more if Dr Senananayake were to be correct.

If your idea is true then Lord Buddha has said everything like a poet so that it has double meaning so that nobody is certain about what he preached.

What a foolish idea to beleive that Lord Buddha was paying with words and hiding the true meanings ! Only Dr Senanayake wants it to happen so that he can start giving whole new set of interpretations.

  • @ Gamini: Here Dr Senanayake is saying that Buddha meant not King Kosol eating food but something spiritual (knowledge or whatever). So there are only two possibilites in any context:
    1. Buddha told King Kosol not to eat (physical) food too much at a time. (This is what I beleive to be true)
    2. Buddha told King Kosol not to do something in his mind but not about physical food (This is what Dr Senanayake says to be true)

    So we weigh the possibilites:
For me it is obvious that Buddha meant about physical food because he used the exact word that addresses to the food.

But Dr Senanyake says Buddha used the word 'food' for something else because vision can't be taught.

There is no in vagueness or contexual nature to this argument. It depends on whether Buddha had a reason to use poetic laguage at this point.

  • Dear Gamini Senanayake,

The fact that some toothpaste could become better than another for an ordinary person is obviously decided by the knowledge and the ability to understand.

But, a Lord Buddha could decide the best toothpaste(s). This decision / conclusion is 100% accurate because a Lord Buddha uses the absolute truth / (knowledge?) to come to a conclusion.

What we "Pruthagjana" people do is, we use "part of truth or knowledge" what we know in order to come to a conclusion without knowing the entire truth. That is why different people have different ideas for different toothpastes because they are having different knowledge or understanding.

But a Lord Buddha who can see the entire truth can give a 100% accurate conclusion.

This, however doesn't imply that ordinary people cannot come to an accurate conclusion. We have to use our wisdom.

If I give an example, Lord Buddha has given some advices on how to increase life span. One such advice is getting to know about "good" foods that will increase our life span. So, choosing "good" food has to be done with proper understanding.

  • How can we judge that certain Buddha's preachings are metaphors and some are not ? When Lord Buddha was told that King Kosol eats lots of (rice?), Lord Buddha asked, "King, isn't it unhealthy to eat that much ? Try to reduce eating"

Lord Buddha was clearly told that he eats a lot before this statement is made. So how do you know that this is a metaphor ?

    Think about the following situation:

You go to meet the Lord Buddha. And you say to him, "Lord, I eat 10 kg of rice everyday".

It is definite that eating this much is unhealthy. So, when Lord Buddha heard this, how would he advise you to reduce eating that much without saying "try to reduce eating" ?

    • @ Chamath, shall we see the process what happened... So after rubbing several times Thero attain to nirvana, if so where was the nirvana till that time >>> Was it in that White piece of fabric ?>>> or was it happen due to rubbing (Action) >>>>>
it's obviously not due both ....
but while doing that Chulla panthaka thero saw truth within him self>> so that made him to attain nirvana...
instead of giving that instruction, Buddha could have given a sermon to him no? but he knew that's not gonna work....
that's why I took this example to u show... Buddha uses some other way to deliver what he wanted to say...

Technically in English "metaphor" may be not accurate 100% with my example..

    • @ Gamini: A metaphor is something always to draw a similarity from a simple or more familier experience, it is never to hide a meaning or make a double meaning.

In your calling "going to beachy head" for suiciding is applicable only when you are talking to a person from UK, who knows what it means. If you are sensible, you would not use it for a man from Sri Lanka.

Here, Dr Senanayake says that Buddha used "not to eat too much" to mean "not to do something (spiritual)..." But here King Kosol first started conversation on his eating too much of food.

Now Dr Senanyake wants us to beleive that Lord Buddha used a metaphor or poetry or indirect language or whatever, to tell him that he should not do something (spiritual) rather than to reduce the amount he is eating.

Accrding to Dr Senanyake, Niether King Kosol nor anyone else before 1971 (time this "Saddarma" was introduced) underststood what Buddha said and further King Kosol died by taking the advice wrong. Buddha did leave it in the same way for Dr Senanyake and his group to apprear and explain it.

When Buddha used metaphors, it is well stated or implied in Paali cannon. One time, when Buddha saw a sack of money He said "Ananda did you see the snake ?". So in the Paali cannon, it clearly says that Buddha refered to the sack of money and used the metaphor of venomous snake to show the dangers of using money (to the Buddha's practice). Paali cannon never left it for Dr Senanyake to come and reveal that there was a snake inside the sack or something.

This is just Dr Senanyake's wanting to fabricate his own version of buddhism, nothing else.

    • "I agree with your point. However, according to psychology, our metaphors have covert meaning, because only covert meanings could be absorbed by subconsciousness."

So if this eating too much story was deviced by Buddha to absorbed by subcounciousness, why shoud Dr Senanyake change it?

According to Dr Senanayake King Kosol's subconciousness did not absorb correctly and he eat less and died.

I think Buddha was very strainght in what he wanted to say, He was a great person with lot of common sense too. That's why He just told King Kosol to stop eating when you feel you can still eat another one handful. He was geneous to say it correctly so that anybody can know what is the right amount to eat at a time.

Buddha has preached plenty of stuff regarding what to do in spiritual world, so he should never want to use a poetry to say those things.

This is nothing but defending what Dr Senanyake's interpretation. This is going to be like a political debate beyond this point.

      Yes, Buddha always uses metaphors.
Buddha says “come and see”. What do you do? You come and see the Buddha’s figure.
Buddha says “cross the river”. What do you do? You cross the Mahavali River to see the vision.

Buddha says “ arogya parama labha- health is greatest profit” What do you do? You do physical exercise and reduce junk food to become healthy.

Buddha say “ Asevanacha balanam pandithanancha sevana” . What do you do? You go and find Pundits to see the vision.

Buddha say “complete (full) your Daana paramitha”. What do you do? You give up your all the material things to see the vision.

Buddha say “see the panna” What do you do? You collect the words to complete you knowledge 100% to see the vision.

It is bit difficult process though, because what is negative and positive for others may not be clear for you until you become noble.
Hope we all make ourselves exemplary Buddhists."

I first ended up in this group to learn what the new interpretation Dr Senanyake was making. So I have had a considerable amount of conversations and readings on his new teaching. Now I am convinced (within my own limits of interlect) that he is just making up his own version of Buddhism and keep on making false interpretations on the traditional teaching based on Vidharshana.

So I thought to keep on making my case (by questioning validity of his claims) through the discussions. I also assume that it brings out great deal of new dhamma from the both Dr Senanyake's new version of dhamma and the traditional teaching of Buddhism. Therefore, somebody interested on this subject can learn the both side of it.

I don't have any personal issue with Dr Senanayake or anybody. I apologize if I hurt somebody's feelings by questioning his/her beleifs. Since English is not my mother tongue, I might be viewed as rough / impolite in the conversations, but I assure that I don't want to humiliate anything or anybody.

Admins of this group has assured to me that they value the opposing opinions too.

In conclusion, I am confident that I am within the threshould of "being an exemplary Buddhist" :-)

    • "Two Buddhas does not arise in the universe."

Do you mean two Lord Buddha's do not arise in the universe?

"Once you see the vision nothing different between you and Gothama Buddha."

If someone becomes a Lord Buddha, there is no difference between Dhamma he preaches and Dhamma preach by other Lord Buddhas.

"Buddha says “come and see”. What do you do? You come and see the Buddha’s figure."

Lord Buddha said "come and see" the Dhamma, right ? Well, I'm not sure whether people listen to this and go and worhsip Lord Buddha's statues. What I've heard is, they worship it to show the respect. However Lord Buddha said that if a person leads a good life, then that will be a great respect for the Lord Buddha.

"Buddha says “cross the river”. What do you do? You cross the Mahavali River to see the vision."

No, I don't think I have ever thought to cross the Mahavali River to see the vision. I think that's silly. However, there is something I need to tell. A nun attained Nirvana by gazing/looking at fire of a "pahan".

"Buddha says “ arogya parama labha- health is greatest profit” What do you do? You do physical exercise and reduce junk food to become healthy."

If you keep eating junk food and lead an unhealthy life style, you would become physically unfit and you might become old soon. Lord Buddha gave the advantages of becoming a monk at young age than becoming a monk at old age.
Also, Lord Buddha gave advises if anyone wants to have a long life span. One of them is "choosing good food".

"Buddha say “ Asevanacha balanam pandithanancha sevana” . What do you do? You go and find Pundits to see the vision."

What is your meaning ? Did Lord Buddha say that meaning ? Why did Lord Buddha instruct teachers to teach "shilpa shasthra"( education?) to their student ?

"Buddha say “complete (full) your Daana paramitha”. What do you do? You give up your all the material things to see the vision."

What did Bodhisathva in Vipassi Jathaka do ? He gave all the materials to the poor and eventually he became poor himself.
I'm afraid, to become a Lord Buddha, one has to even sacrifice the life to fulfill paramitha.
Also, a Lord Buddha cannot be killed, because of the power of Paramitha. But Arahaths can be killed, that's why even a Pase Buddha passed away when he was "shot" at Lord Buddha's time.

"Buddha say “see the panna” What do you do? You collect the words to complete you knowledge 100% to see the vision."

You mean the knowledge of Buddhism ?
If so, yes I agree. Lord Buddha said that it is not enough of knowing that desires for kama is bad. He advised to to start working to get rid of desires. So, knowing is not enough, you have to make it practical.

"You accept the Buddha’s word and do effort to see the vision. Finally what happen? Die."

Even Lord Buddha said when he was old, something like, "I am like a broken cart now", isn't it ? Even Lord Buddha passed away. Also, even Karma reactions were acted on him. Because, everyone and everything is bound to the "Niyama Dhamma" such as "Dhamma Niyama", "Kamma Niyama". Isn't it ?

"Chamath say: It is definite that eating this much is unhealthy. So, when Lord Buddha heard this, how would he advise you to reduce eating that much without saying "try to reduce eating" ?
A:Buddha advises you to reduce your eating"

Yes, eating too much is unhealthy.

"Chmath say: Lord Buddha was clearly told that he eats a lot before this statement is made. So how do you know that this is a metaphor ?"
"Only one Buddha arises in the universe."

I ask again, "Lord Buddha was clearly told that he eats a lot before this statement is made. So how do you know that this is a metaphor ?"
And also, why didn't Lord Buddha help him by explaining your inside meaning ?

    • Buddha does arise in the universe but Lord Buddha's do not arise in the universe. Lord Buddha arise only mind maid world.

Lord Buddha say "come and see" the Dhamma, but he does not say “come and accept” the dhamma

Chamath say “However Lord Buddha said that if a person leads a good life, then that will be a great respect for the Lord Buddha.”

If you have life you have no good life.

A nun attained Nirvana by gazing/looking at fire of a "pahan". Yes it is. It is called ‘vidarshna’.

"Buddha says “ arogya parama labha- health is greatest profit” What do you do? You do physical exercise and reduce junk food to become healthy."

Chamath says “If you keep eating junk food and lead an unhealthy life style, you would become physically unfit and you might become old soon. Lord Buddha gave the advantages of becoming a monk at young age than becoming a monk at old age.”
That is why I told you “when Buddha says “cross the river”, You cross the Mahavali River.

Chamath says “Lord Buddha gave advises if anyone wants to have a long life span. One of them is choosing good food".

Yes what is the good food? The good food is called ‘amurthya’- panna. Once you eat amurthaya you never die.

"Buddha say “ Asevanacha balanam pandithanancha sevana” . What do you do? You go and find Pundits to see the vision."

You can have education from the school (Thaksalava). That knowledge is enough to become cart man (karaththa karaya-every body are doing same job). You have to remove the two oxen (cows) from your cart before see the vision.

Chamath say, What did Bodhisathva in Vipassi Jathaka do ? He gave all the materials to the poor and eventually he became poor himself.

Yes, but Bodhisathva did not see the vision in that life. Once you give all the materials to the poor people, they become rich and you became poor. You have to ‘see’ material things do not exist. Then you can complete ‘Dhana paramitha’.
Chamath say “ I'm afraid, to become a Lord Buddha, one has to even sacrifice the life to fulfill paramitha.”

But you have to sacrifice your life to see the vision. If you have life definitely you have death. It you need to conquer your death you have to first kill (sacrifice) your life.
Buddha cannot be killed, because he has no life.

Chamath say “If so, yes I agree. Lord Buddha said that it is not enough of knowing that desires for kama is bad. He advised to to start working to get rid of desires. So, knowing is not enough, you have to make it practical.”

Buddha’s path is not practical path. Please read again the ogha tharan sutra.
Yes Gothama Buddha said “ Ananda my body is like a broken cart now” but cart does not exist . many people say Lord Buddha passed away. But Buddha never passes away. Buddha has no action or reaction of Karma. Buddha is beyond the all Niyama Dhamma.

Yes, If you eat too much Buddha would advice you to reduce your eating. If you accept the Buddha’s word and reduce eating, at last you will die out side of your palace. If you see the Buddha’s word you would come back to the palace and never die.

"Chamath say: Lord Buddha was clearly told that he eats a lot before this statement is made. So how do you know that this is a metaphor ?"

"Only one Buddha arises in the universe." Gothama Buddha and Maitruya Buddha are the same. Maitruya Buddha knows what Gothama Buddha said. Maitriya Buddha knows that is a metaphor.

    • "Buddha does arise in the universe but Lord Buddha's do not arise in the universe. Lord Buddha arise only mind maid world."

Did Lord Buddha say that a Lord Buddha arise only in mind made world ?

"If you have life you have no good life."

It depends on your behaviour. If you do good, you'd get a good life and if you do bad, you'd get a bad life.

"Chamath says “If you keep eating junk food and lead an unhealthy life style, you would become physically unfit and you might become old soon. Lord Buddha gave the advantages of becoming a monk at young age than becoming a monk at old age.”
That is why I told you “when Buddha says “cross the river”, You cross the Mahavali River."

I have already said that crossing Mahaveli River to see the truth could be silly. What is the connection with this and becoming old age ? Before Lord Buddha passed away, he said, "I am old now. I will have to go away from you soon..."

"Chamath says “Lord Buddha gave advises if anyone wants to have a long life span. One of them is choosing good food".
Yes what is the good food? The good food is called ‘amurthya’- panna. Once you eat amurthaya you never die."

Hold on, not only eating good food. If I'm right, Lord Buddha also said that living a "Brahmachariya" life will also result for a long life span. Also, Lord Buddha said that abstainig from eating food before previous ate food have digested increases life span. Is "never dieing" fairy tail ? Even Lord Buddha passed away.

"You can have education from the school (Thaksalava). That knowledge is enough to become cart man (karaththa karaya-every body are doing same job). You have to remove the two oxen (cows) from your cart before see the vision."

So what is the meaning of "two cows" according to your explanation ?

If you say that Dana paramitha is seeing materials do not exist, then, are you telling that Dana does not give any relation to "athharima" / giving away stuff to others ?

Well Dr, if I'm going to help the poor and the people in need, are you saying that I'm going to do something useless ?

"Buddha cannot be killed, because he has no life."

Isn't it because of the power of Paramitha ?

      Anyway, Some killed Arahaths.

"Buddha has no action or reaction of Karma. Buddha is beyond the all Niyama Dhamma."

Then why did Lord Buddha's toe got "hurt" when Devadaththa stoned him ? Isn't it because of Karma ? Why did Lord Buddha went to the Jeevaka Wedha to get a treatment for the wound ?

Why did Lord Buddha have a back pain ?

Why did Lord Buddha have a headache ?

Why did Lord Buddha have an incurable disease called ("Dysentery"?) (Sinhala term: Le Athisaraya")

Why did Lord Buddha say before he passed away, "I am old now. I will be going away from you soon"

"Yes, If you eat too much Buddha would advice you to reduce your eating. If you accept the Buddha’s word and reduce eating, at last you will die out side of your palace. If you see the Buddha’s word you would come back to the palace and never die."

What's wrong if someone reduces eating and then attain Nirvana ? Is it wrong if someone realizes that eating junk foods is useless and thus abstain from eating them ?

Btw, did Gauthama Lord Buddha say that what he said is a metaphor ?

    • Chamath,

Do you think that Buddha (Lord or Gauthama), is a human being
      or a Super human?
to have headache, disease or back pain & finally passed away !

Have you heard what Buddha preached to Upaka Aajeewaka ?

If he passed away then why did he said I have overcome death(Maara Paraajaya) ?

    • Nothing wrong with "someone reduces eating and then attain Nirvana "
but to see nirwana you have to reduce eating "Rupa" from your sensers(eye ,ear,,,,) too.
That will only happen automatically when listning to saddhama not shaddhamma.
why are you taking easy part to reduce first better take heavy part first.
Then there won't any explanation for easy part.
easy part doesn't give you a enough skill to deal with heavy part relatively
